guard dog Guard Dog for your working desk

Do you love maintaining your personal space and jealously guard it as though it is the elixir of life itself? The Guard Dog which is USB-powered might just do the trick then – after all, it will growl menacingly at anyone who ventures too close to your cubicle for comfort. This is made possible thanks to a built-in motion sensor which will alert the Guard Dog to intruders, and unlike your average pooch that might be tempted by a poisoned piece of meat, this one won’t accept treats of any kind albeit living up to the adage that his bark is worse than his bite! You can choose to have the Guard Dog run off USB power (great during office hours) or battery (if you’re elsewhere away from a computer). Nice to know that it will already ship with a trio of AA batteries to help you get started right out of the box. The price to pay might be a wee bit steep for most people though – we’re talking about $79 here.

Vivid pink mini camera 2 Bright Pink D Pod Digital Camera

No gadget invented is ever complete without having a tiny version.  It’s in the rule book somewhere, but you absolutely must have a mini version available.  Thankfully digital camera creators have definitely read that rule book.  Along those lines is the Takara Tomy D-Pods Digital Camera.  It’s small enough to keep any fan of tiny gadgets very happy.

It comes in blinding pink with black accents as well as a more subtle black and white version.  It can take pictures and short video clips.  It also has a 15 second self timer that’ll let you take pictures with your friends.  It comes with the usual items like a USB cable, a manual that will require you know how to read Japanese and a CD-Rom.  You can purchase one for ¥5,750.00 or right around $68 through Geek Stuff 4U.

luggage tag usb flash drive 500x333 Luggage Tag Flash Drive

Luggage tags are handy to help your luggage make its way back to you should it get separated from you.  However, that tiny little tag only leaves room for an address, your name and an email.  There are times when you might want more information listed, for those occasions, you could add some extra information on the flash drive itself.

If you’re a student and want the suitcase sent to a different address than your parent’s address.  You can always include certain details like that on the tag.  You could even just use it as a normal flash drive when you’re not traveling.  They come in bright colors, so you’ll easily be able spot your bag from a distance.  Each one of the 2GB drives can be purchased for $29.95.

personalsub thumb 550xauto 43273 300x185 Two people can live in this yellow submarineWe have reported on a lot of personal submarines here at Coolest Gadgets like the Marion Hyper-sub powerboat, the Nautilus VAS Luxury submersible, even Richard Branson’s underwater plane, the Nymph.

This is another personal submarine, and it is yellow. Unfortunately, it is not big enough so we all can live in it, as it only seats two people with upright seating.

It is good for going 1,000 feet under the water, and the life support is good for six hours. It also features a 120 volt and 24 volt battery bank, two 3 horsepower main thrusters, two 3 horsepower vertical thrusters, four external halogen lamps, VHF communication radio, GPS, as well as a climate controlled sphere. I’m not certain what that means, but I’m guessing you can make it very warm or very cool in there.

I don’t know how far you could go with this guy from the shore, but man, I would love to see it for myself. Anyone know if you need a license to drive one of these things? I wonder how many mini subs are out there under the water anyway.

After all, they only cost a low price of…two million dollars? Well, I knew that this type of hobby wouldn’t be cheap.

I’m looking for a portable gadget (like a PDA or gaming device) that I can use to control a USB tethered digital camera using a free Linux application, so I can write a script to shoot complicated series of photographs. I’m looking for the cheapest gadget of any sort – used on ebay or wherever – that is small, battery powered, can serve as a USB host, and run Linux.

I don’t care if it’s an old PDA with 2 MB of memory and a 160×160 B&W screen. As long as it’s cheap. There’s no point in suggesting a new iPaq.

And I need to be able to strap it to a digital camera and shoot hand-held, so no laptops or even netbooks. Also, don’t suggest a device that’s only capable of USB peripheral mode, it needs to serve as the USB host of the camera.

A PDA, gaming device, cell phone, MP3 player, or whatever is fine. It doesn’t need to ship with Linux, as long as there’s a Linux distro I can run on it without having to start modifying a bunch of things to make it work – it needs a proven Linux variety for it. Any ideas?

Best reply by David:

Some PDA’s support usb host ability, but most don’t. The CHEAP ones will use usb 1.1, not 2.0. This may be fine for controlling a camera. I found a partial list of PDA type devices that support usb here:

http://forum.mypdacafe.com/viewtopic.php?t=4177&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=host&start=15

I don’t have a list of which of these run Linux, though most PDA’s can be hammered to take linux.

A used one of those by can be found on ebay or a surplus store. I would imagine a used one that is old enough could be found for about $100.

I don’t think a gaming device will work, as I don’t know of any portable ones that are USB host capable, just client.
