Handspring Visor Deluxe (Graphite)

41F2ERN3SVL. SL160 Handspring Visor Deluxe (Graphite)

  • 8 MB RAM stores thousands of addresses, appointments, to-do items, memos, and more
  • Fully compatible with thousands of Palm OS applications
  • Supports optional expansion modules for MP3 player, pager, modem, GPS, video games, and more
  • Important note: If you are running Windows 95/NT or using a non-USB Macintosh, you must order the Serial HotSync Cradle separately
  • What’s in the box: Visor Deluxe, HotSync cradle, stylus, snap cover, leather slip case, Palm Desktop software, two AAA batteries

The Handspring Visor Deluxe is the first expandable handheld computer that lets you instantly turn an organizer into a digital camera, music player, or even a phone. It comes with 8 MB of RAM, so you have more than enough room to store all your data, plus a myriad of other programs and information. Plus, it features the amazing Springboard expansion slot, so you can snap in a wide range of hardware and software modules and turn your Visor into whatever you want it to be. Moreover, it is plug-and-play so there are no drivers to load. Just snap in a module and it works! It even comes in five great colors – ice, graphite, blue, orange, and green – so you are sure to find one that suits your style, personality, or mood. The Handspring Visor Deluxe is the hot new handheld that runs the popular Palm OS, so it’s compatible with thousands of existing applications. It’s also expandable with Springboard modules that can add extra memory or a modem, or transform your Visor into an MP3 player, video game, GPS receiver, and more. Plus, its fast-synchronizing USB connection is compatible with both the PC and Macintosh.

To set up the Handspring Visor Deluxe, we followed the Getting Started instructions printed on the software CD-ROM case, inserting the batteries, calibrating the touch screen, entering the date and time, connecting the included USB cradle to our PC (an optional serial cradle is available), installing the desktop synchronization software, and synchronizing the Visor with our PC. The entire setup process was straightforward and intuitive, requiring only about five minutes.

Fans of Palm Computing’s Palm III line of connected organizers will have no difficulty using the Visor, as it runs on a licensed version of the Palm OS. All the popular Palm personal information management (PIM) applications are included and work exactly the same way as they do on the Palm. The Visor also uses Palm’s Graffiti handwriting recognition system for text entry, which takes only a few minutes to learn and a few hours of practice to master. Handspring has added to the Palm OS an advanced date book, calculator, world clock, and support for floating-point math.

The Visor Deluxe comes with 8 MB of RAM, providing plenty of room for thousands of addresses, to-do items, and memos; hundreds of e-mail messages; and several years of appointments. It also includes a USB synchronization cradle, two AAA batteries, a stick-on Graffiti “cheat sheet,” a leather slip case, a stylus, a Handspring logo decal, a Quick Reference Guide, inserts describing accessories and cases, and a software CD-ROM. The CD-ROM includes Palm Desktop Software 3.01, a software link to Microsoft Outlook, and the full-length User’s Guide. However, the Visor Deluxe does not come with an AC adapter.

Using the Visor was intuitive and fun, just like the Palm III series organizers that it’s based on. However, unlike the Palm, the Visor has an easily accessible expansion port that supports Springboard modules. For our tests, we installed a modem module, an 8 MB memory module, the Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf game, and a Physician’s Desk Reference module (note that you can install only one module at a time). Installing these modules is very easy, and they can greatly increase the functionality, power, and usefulness of the Visor. (For more information, see the descriptions of the individual Springboard modules.

Overall, we were very impressed with the Visor. It takes the best of the popular Palm platform, and adds memory and expandability–all at a great price. –Mike Brown

Pros:

  • Easy to set up and use
  • Runs the Palm OS and supports thousands of existing Palm applications
  • Expandable with Springboard modules
  • Good price

Cons:

  • No AC adapter included

Important note to customers: Your Visor comes with a free USB cradle, but not all computers and operating system are USB compatible. If your computer uses Windows 95, Windows NT, or Mac OS 8.0 or below, or if your computer is not equipped with USB ports, you’ll need to purchase an additional serialcradle to synchronize your computer with your new Visor. The Handspring Visor Deluxe connected organizer is all you’ll need to store thousands of names, addresses, appointments, memos, to-do items, expense items, and e-mail. Based on the popular Palm OS, the Handspring Visor Deluxe is fully compatible with thousands of Palm Computing platform applications. Plus, Handspring has added features to the Palm OS like an advanced date book, calculator, world clock, and built-in floating-point math support.

The Handspring Visor Deluxe offers a fast USB connection, making synchronizing your PC or Mac simple. Exchange of information between your handheld and PC occurs with the touch of a button. HotSync technology ensures all your data is backed up and enables significantly faster synchronization with USB support than the normal serial connection. (An optional serial cradle is available.)

The Handspring Visor Deluxe with its 8 MB RAM also stores 12,000 addresses, 10 years of appointments, 6,000 to-do items, 6,000 memos, and 400 e-mail messages, plus it has plenty of room for add-on applications. This model includes support for Lotus cc:Mail, Microsoft Outlook, and Qualcomm Eudora. Software to synchronize with AOL, Lotus Notes, Netscape Communicator, and POP3 mail is sold separately.

The Handspring Visor Deluxe is fully expandable with an external expansion slot that lets you add optional software and hardware modules (called Springboard modules) in a snap. Modules like an MP3 player, pager, modem, GPS receiver, or video game can be added to make a new device.

The Handspring Visor Deluxe comes with a HotSync cradle, stylus, snap cover, leather slip case, Palm Desktop software (Windows and Mac), software link to Microsoft Outlook (Windows only), two AAA batteries, and a one-year warranty.

PalmOne Zire 71 Handheld

51F5CSE9T2L. SL160 PalmOne Zire 71 Handheld Reviews

  • Bright, 320×320 transflective TFT color display supports more than 65,000 colors
  • Texas Instruments OMAP310 processor (ARM); 144 MHz
  • Integrated digital camera with 640×480 resolution, auto exposure, and automatic white balance control
  • SD expansion slot
  • Zire 71 Handheld, Protective Carrying Case, USB HotSync Cradle, Power Adapter, Desktop Software CD-ROM, Software Essentials CD-ROM, Stylus

Zire71 BackLightOff allows you to toggle the backlight of your Zire 71. In order to reactivate backlight relaunch the app or simply adjust brightness as usual. Palm’s Zire brand is designed primarily for consumers rather than for professionals. The first Zire was a low cost, entry level machine, this one, the second in the range, is a multimedia extravaganza. The most eye catching feature of the Zire 71, after you’ve noticed the sleek rounded blue casing for the hardware, is the built-in digital camera.

zire 71 PalmOne Zire 71 Handheld Reviews
The Zire 71′s built-in digital camera

You need to slide the upper and lower body apart to reveal it, and when you do so the Zire 71’s screen automatically turns into a viewfinder. Click the button that is also revealed during the sliding process, and you can take pictures, at resolutions of 160 x 120, 320 x 240 and 640 x 480.

Palm has even produced a new version of Palm Desktop to help you make the most of managing digital images. This includes a nice viewer and some editing tools. Palm Desktop also, incidentally, has a new installer which is more efficient than before when it comes to selecting multiple applications to send to your Palm. The Zire 71 runs version 5 of the Palm operating system, which has improved sound features. Install the provided copy of the Real One player and you can play MP3 music through headphones. Gaming is assisted by a joystick style navigation button that sits beneath the screen. But when you want to use the Zire 71 for more traditional personal information management tasks you can tap the application shortcut buttons to launch Date Book, Address Book or Note Pad. The fourth button takes you to your digital photo library. As usual these buttons can be reallocated to other applications if you like.

Only 13MB of to the 16MB of memory on board is actually available for applications and data, but an SD card slot means you can add to this easily. The screen is a superb transreflective TFT type – it is the best we’ve seen on a PDA from Palm. The Universal Connector means existing peripherals like keyboards which support this should work without problems with the Zire 71. The Zire 71 is a great multimedia PDA which finally puts Palm in a position to rival Sony for its Multimedia crown. –Sandra VogelEarly Adopters Pick: April 2003. First handheld under 0 to have a built-in digital camera.

The Palm Zire 71 handheld helps you organize your life on the fly. PalmOne Tungsten T3 Handheld

41ZZTNCP15L. SL160 PalmOne Tungsten T3 Handheld

  • Palm’s new breakthrough Stretch Display
  • Device slides open to reveal a 320×480 display with 50% more viewing area
  • Ultra-fast 400MHz Intel XScale processor and 64 MB of internal memory
  • Wirelessly access email, dial phone numbers, send text messages and connect to the Internet
  • Handheld device; Palm Desktop software, including Documents To Go and Adobe Acrobat for Palm OS

The Tungsten T3 handheld comes packed with power and boasts Palm’s new breakthrough Stretch Display.Slide open to reveal the 320×480 display with 50% more viewing area (than other Palm handhelds) and twice the resolution of Pocket PC 2003 handhelds. Keep it compact for easy, one-handed access to information. It instantly rotates from portrait to landscape, and a new status bar provides one-tap access to battery and memory levels, Bluetooth status and more from a single location. With an ultra-fast 400MHz Intel XScale processor and 64MB of internal memory, it handles Word, Excel and PowerPoint-compatible files, wireless applications and multimedia tasks with lightning speed and room to spare. Its new and improved organization stores more of your important information and provides better synchronization with Outlook. The ultra-capable Tungsten T3 handheld also features MP3 and video playback software, built-in Bluetooth, voice-recording, the latest Palm OS and more. Kicking the technology advances up another notch, the Palm Tungsten T3 delivers a professional, sleek alternative to bulkier Pocket PCs that’s chock-full of productivity enhancing and information sharing applications. Improvements over the T2 include a full-screen mode when the bottom casing is slid open, a bevy of enhanced display options, compatibility with Java applets, larger internal memory, and an easier to access status bar.

First, just the technical facts:

  • Palm OS 5.2.1
  • 32-bit, 400 MHz Intel XScale processor
  • 64 MB internal RAM, with 52 MB usable for applications and file storage (an improvement over the T2′s 29 MB usable RAM)
  • Bluetooth wireless connectivity
  • Secure Digital memory card expansion slot
  • 4.3 (closed) x 3.0 x 0.66 inches, 5.5 ounces

 PalmOne Tungsten T3 Handheld
The T3′s Stretch Display

Overall, the Tungsten T3 isn’t that much smaller than the Zire 71, but it does feel nicely compact in the hand and its larger navigation button is easier to manipulate with just your thumb. However, the “wow factor” comes into full force when you slide down the bottom of the T3′ s ca

se to reveal the full screen mode. And it gets even better. The standard “silkscreened” Graffiti input area (so-called because its icons and borders are printed onto the screen’s glass) is now replaced by a digital version, which can be hidden to reveal an even larger screen. We found this useful when writing long notes in Memos and viewing an expanded daily calendar view. You don’t actually need the Graffiti writing area to input data into notes or Calendar items. With the Full-Screen Writing preference turned on, you can write Graffiti characters anywhere on the screen (you’ll even see an outline traced on the screen as you write). But the crowning display enhancement is the ability to rotate the screen to landscape view, which was especially handy when viewing downloaded movie trailers (using the included Kinoma video player). If you’re left-handed, you can change the orientation in landscape view so that the status bar and Graffiti input area are more accessible to your own orientation.

The T3 includes the familiar suite of Palm applications (Calendar, Contacts, Memos, and Tasks) as well as a number of third-party software title (ranging from Acrobat Reader to RealOne Player for listening to digital audio). Calendar has been given an Outlook-friendly makeover, adding an Agenda view that consolidates all of today’s appointments, tasks, and new e-mails. With full-screen mode on, Calendar’s month view now displays smaller calendars for the previous and next months.

Bluetooth wireless functionality is built in, and the Tungsten T3 still includes the BlueBoard and BlueChat for sharing information with other Tungsten users. For Web communication, Palm includes VersaMail and WebBrowser Pro, both of which can be used along with a Bluetooth phone. Additionally, VersaMail can access a corporate e-mail account, including Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino servers.

Java has also now entered the Palm OS arena, expanding the application development opportunities. The T3 comes with a few sample applets (including a periodic table that would be handy at our local pub’s trivia night), but we’ll have to wait for more development before Java becomes a full Palm OS tool.

Our only complaint, design-wise, is the placement of the Voice Memo button, which as been placed toward the top of the left side of the case, below the on/off button on the top panel. When turning on the device, our left hand’s thumb continually triggered the Voice Memo app when attempting to turn on the T3. Note that you can also turn the T3 on by pressing one of the application buttons surrounding the Navigator, or by sliding the bottom case open. Overall, the Tungsten T3 is a Palm powerhouse, blending its traditional information management strength with new multimedia and connectivity functionality (both wired and wireless). It’s about as perfect a personal productivity agent for professional settings as it gets. –Agen G.N. Schmitz

Pros:

  • Crisp, bright color screen
  • Fast processor, ample internal memory, and expansion slot to boot
  • Digital Graffiti input area can be hidden for full screen display
  • Screen can be rotated to landscape view
  • Access to corporate e-mail and Bluetooth wireless connectivity

Con:

  • Voice Memo button gets in the way of turning on and off

PalmOne VIIx Wireless Handheld

510K4ANVYQL. SL160 PalmOne VIIx Wireless Handheld

  • 8 MB RAM, 4 times the memory of the standard Palm VII handheld
  • Stores thousands of addresses, appointments, to-do items, and memos
  • What’s in the box: Palm VIIx, Stylus pen, AC adapter, PC serial port, Hotsync docking cradle, Protective leather cover, Palm Desktop software

When the Palm VII was first released, it garnered a lot of geek chic, thanks to it being the first handheld to include an integrated wireless modem. With more and more wireless handheld devices and peripherals entering the market (such as the RIM Blackberry and the OmniSky Minstrel modem for the Palm V), is Palm’s wireless entry still a viable alternative? Definitely (but with a caveat or two).

The Palm VIIx handheld has had its memory bumped up to 8 MB (from only 2 MB in the original Palm VII), and it includes all the practical features we’ve come to expect from Palm–the easy-to-learn (and use) Palm OS, a sharp screen with contrast-variable backlighting, and infrared beaming of information.

But it’s the wireless connectivity–and the ease and quickness of installation and connection–that really makes the Palm VIIx shine. You’ll first need to add the Palm VIIx’s two AAA batteries, which are also used to charge the modem’s internal, rechargeable ni-cad battery. It takes about 70 minutes to fully charge the device. But that’ll give you time to play around with the other Palm apps or practice your Graffiti writing skills.

Once charged, we simply flipped up the radio transceiver antenna (which also turns on the screen) and connected to the Palm.net network in seconds. Then we set up our account and chose a monthly service plan–which reminded us that wireless ease doesn’t come cheap. These plans range from .99 for 50 KB of information downloaded (and .20 per additional KB) to .99 for unlimited usage. The Palm.net site estimates that 50 KB equals about 150 downloaded Palm screens of information–which isn’t that much if you’re doing a bit of online shopping or checking of sports scores.

The other important factor to remember is that you won’t be able to view the entire Internet. The Palm VII connects only to certain sites that offer Palm Query Applications (or PQAs), which send Web Clippings instead of HTML. These Web Clippings are specially configured minipages that minimize both display requirements (to fit on the Palm VII’s screen) and bandwidth usage. Thus, while we weren’t able to view the day’s English Premier League scores on Soccernet, we could read headlines at ABC News, get driving directions with MapQuest, and check airline flight status using Travelocity. (The Palm VII comes with 22 Web Clippings, but you can download more from www.palm.net/apps–from Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary to a Starbucks locator.)

E-mail was a snap using the included iMessenger app and the Palm.net e-mail address that we set up. This account won’t hook up with an existing POP account, but there are several good third-party apps on the market that you can install to grab e-mail from your regular accounts.

Ultimately, the Palm VIIx–and persistent wireless connectivity–isn’t for everyone because of its online limitations to proprietary Web Clippings. But with a lot still in its favor–the robust Palm OS organizer environment, hassle-free activation, quick connection to the wireless network, easy e-mailing, and good nationwide coverage (featuring about 260 major metropolitan areas)–the Palm VIIx handheld is still king of the wireless jungle. –Agen SchmitzWith 8 MB of memory, the new Palm VIIx handheld has four times the memory of the Palm VII, which means you have the capacity to store four times the number of addresses, appointments, to-do items, memos, and iMessenger messages. You can customize the Palm VIIx with your choice of hundreds of Web clipping applications and thousands of third-party add-on applications. You have instant access to a variety of Web-based information such as weather and traffic reports, news items, flight information, showtimes, and restaurant reviews. The Palm VIIx also lets you communicate via e-mail and stay on top of your information wirelessly and easily.

It comes with integrated hardware, software, and wireless communication service so you can activate it right out of the box. The included HotSync cradle allows you to quickly back up and exchange information between your handheld and your PC. The display’s enhanced technology makes it easier to see at all angles, in dim light, and in bright sunlight. The Palm VIIx also includes a carrying case to protect your handheld from scuffs and scratches.

What’s in the box

  • Palm VIIx
  • Stylus pen
  • AC adapter
  • PC serial port
  • Hotsync docking cradle

Handspring Visor Deluxe (Ice)

51M967VM7GL. SL160 Handspring Visor Deluxe (Ice)

The Handspring Visor Deluxe connected organizer is all you’ll need to store thousands of names, addresses, appointments, memos, to-do items, expense items, and e-mail.
