Music is the heart and soul of every culture. It is one of the oldest forms of entertainment known to mankind. Music is a way of expressing emotions and feelings. We listen to music when we want to relax. We listen to music when we are happy. We are truly indispensable from music.
The technology of music too has changed over the last century, from gramophone records to music cds. Music can be of different types, classical, Asian, western, hip-hop, reggae, rock, pop, country, jazz, metal and many more variations. Every place has its own music. While Latin America is known for its Latino music, Caribbean is known for its drums and lively music while Indian subcontinent is more famous for its classical music. USA has contributed in the form of rock and other heavy forms of music.
Though not so long ago music cassettes dominated the music market, they have been completely overtaken now by CDs and DVDs. Over the last few decades, the way we listen to music has been changing very rapidly. Sony caused a real upheaval in the music technology market by introducing the first walkmans in 1979. It completely changed the face of not only music industry but also of Sony. This started the fight for building more and more compact music systems and easy to carry music devices. The late 1980s saw the introduction of first CD players. And with the technology and internet moving hand in hand, it saw the arrival of mp3 formats of music. With this format of music, one could store well over a hundred songs on a single CD as compared to just about 20 songs with the previous formats.
The year 2001 saw the start of portable USB devices hitting the market. These devices flooded the market and they were not just inexpensive but also extremely lightweight. Apart from these advantages, a normal 128 MB USB player could store upto 60-70 music songs in its different formats. They could also be used for data storage as they can be easily connected with any computer. But as quickly as these USB music players flooded the market, their exit was even sooner. The year 2002 saw Apple’s iPods entering the music market and they created an unforeseen craze. Their sales went skyrocketing inspite of the fact that they were costlier than USB music players. iPods have become more of a fashion statement and not just a portable music player now. And now even mobile phones have joined the race of selling music. With Nokia’s N-series mobile phones in market, the fight for the best portable music devices doesn’t seem to be ending soon.
Anyways, whatever may be the device, music will remain one of the most indispensable parts of our lives.
