Will the Zune’s battery life continue to suck?

Update: Microsoft has updated their previous figures to a more admirable 33 hours of music playback and 8.5 hours of video, with Wi-Fi off. Charge time is approximately 3 hours. I’ve officially stopped fuming.
Microsoft has finally come out with its battery life estimates for the iPod Touch, by comparison, boasts 36 hours of audio playback and 6 hours of video.
What happened, Microsoft? The Zune HD is packing a power-conserving OLED screen and one of the most impressive and efficient mobile processors on the market.
OK, at this point I know I need to file this post in the “unhinged rant” category, but this is genuinely disappointing. For Microsoft’s sake, let’s pray we’re looking at a typo (Update: it was!), because when Apple drops a new iPod Touch in September, you can bet its battery life won’t be going backwards.

How to load music onto a mobile phone
As CNET’s Senior Editor for MP3 player reviews, you’d think I’d be losing sleep over the fact that the majority of the mobile phones on the market include some form of integrated music playback. But in spite of manufacturer’s efforts to fashion the mobile phone into a portable music powerhouse, there’s still a lot of confusion out there when it comes to transferring music from a computer to your phone. Sure, most of us can figure out how to transfer music from iTunes to an iPhone, but what about loading music on your sister’s LG enV Touch, or your dad’s old Blackberry?
There’s no fool-proof method for getting music onto any mobile phone, but I’ve put together a video and slideshow demonstrating a handful of techniques that should come in handy in most cases. Feel free to share other recommendations in the comments section.

New S-Series Walkman or Hannah Montana cast-off?
(Credit: SonyInsider)OK, maybe I’m being too harsh on what appears to be the next-generation S-Series Walkman, but come on! Could Sony possibly evoke Mickey Mouse any more? Admittedly, the current S-Series has a special place in my heart, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting a follow-up to the line, which I had on good authority would be in my hands by this fall. As such, I don’t doubt SonyInsider’s breaking story has at least a hint of accuracy.
But I have to say I’m none-too-taken with the Disney-esque design of the purported player, though maybe it’s the bright purples and pinks that are throwing me off–no doubt the black version looks much more subtle.
But let’s take a moment to focus on the positive, shall we? First of all, look at that glorious screen! It looks massive–at least for a device as small and slender as this Walkman appears to be. Also, check out the integrated speakers on that puppy; looks like an indicator that we might be getting stereo sound out of two speakers (flanking the top and bottom of the display).
And I have no doubt the S-Series will continue to pack in all the great features we’ve become used to: noise-canceling capability, quality earphones, iTunes podcast support, subscription music playback, an FM tuner, and SensMe Channels smart playlists. Not to mention prevalent album art and–dare I speak of it? Integrated Slacker support, perhaps? True, that looks like a metal chassis, meaning Wi-Fi is unlikely, but a girl can dream. While I’m at it, give me 16GB and 32GB versions, please. Thanks in advance, Sony.

Obviously, an MP3 player’s foremost purpose is music playback, but these days people are using their devices for much more than just that. You can view photos, watch videos, even play games in some cases. But perhaps one of the most popular side dishes people like to enjoy is podcasts–heck, it’s the main dish for some. Podcasts are great for many reasons, not the least of which is that they’re free. Plus, you can count on finding someone talking about just about any topic known to man, so there’s something for everyone.
Of course, not every MP3 player handles podcasts equally, which is why I’ve rounded up some of the best options for you here. The criteria? At the very least have a separate menu sort dedicated to podcasts. Other desirable features include user-friendly podcast-management software, bookmarking capability (whether active or passive), accelerated fast-forwarding, variable playback speeds, and the ability to delete podcasts on the fly once you’re done listening.
