What a letdown: Sweet new Walkmans not for U.S.

The better S-Series

(Credit: SonyInsider)

It was a sad day when I reviewed the MP3-players/sony-s-series-walkman/4505-6490_7-33770111.html”>second-gen Sony S-Series Walkman. We expected a worthy successor to MP3-players/sony-walkman-nwz-s638/4505-6490_7-33270801.html”>this fantastic MP3 player and instead were met with a mere shadow of the device and its former glory. True, you still get top-notch sound quality, impressive battery life, and even the added bonus of external speakers, but what happened to my podcast support, upgraded headphones, expanded sound enhancement options, interface personalization, SensMe Channels, and Rhapsody DNA?

Well, most of those things got funneled into the “expanded” S-Series, the S640 and S740 lines, which–naturally–Sony has no intention of offering to U.S. buyers. (The speaker-sporting model is the S540.) These two players differ in only one way: the S740 offers integrated noise canceling, whereas the S640 does not. Other than that, both devices include just about everything that made the original S-Series Walkman so freakin’ sweet, plus the ability to output to a TV and what appears to be some sort of audio recording option. Oh, and it’s available in a 32GB option. You’re killing me, Sony!

Sony Walkman
A-Series Walkman: such a tease

(Credit: SonyInsider)

Adding insult to injury is the Japan-only release of a next-gen A-Series Walkman, a seemingly spectacular MP3 player with a 2.8-inch WQVGA OLED screen. It offers an S-Master digital amplifier, FM radio, digital noise canceling, and the ability to output to TV at 720×480. The package also includes Sony’s MDR-EX300SL earphones (i.e. not shoddy stock earbuds). Oh, and have I mentioned it’s available in capacities up to 64GB? Seriously. Killing. Me.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to write a strongly-worded letter.

Tune in: Six MP3 players with great FM radios

FM to the Internet: I ain't dead yet. The average person listens to 17 hours of terrestrial radio every week, and that’s according to a Pandora executive.

Sure, you’ve loaded a fabulous collection of digital audio tracks onto your MP3 player, but what do you do when your tunes begin to sound just a bit too familiar? That’s where an FM tuner comes in. In many places, FM radio still offers plenty of worthwhile content for your listening pleasure, and it can provide a refreshing break from your regular rotation. Plus, it’s a great extra to have at the gym, allowing you to tune into the TVs and take your mind off that vigorous workout.

So, if you’re not among the uberdiligent who always remember to sync up their players for fresh content, be sure to pick one with an FM tuner onboard. Unfortunately, although many players come with this nifty feature, not all of them deliver quite as advertised. In fact, we’ve come across a few that cut in and out even with strong signals.

But don’t fret. There are several players available with decent FM tuners; in fact, I easily found six with great-sounding radios. Not only that, but each of the players here offers an autoscan function and at least 10 preset slots, so you won’t have to fumble around finding your favorite stations. Moreover, several of them, such as the iPod Nano and Zune HD, offer RDS and song tagging.

Check out the radio-worthy MP3 players.

Use the Zune HD with a Mac

Who says you can’t use the Zune HD with a Mac? Well, I did, for one…but contrary to popular belief I sometimes actually enjoy admitting when I’m wrong. As a Mac user with a penchant for non-iPod MP3 players, I often feel left out in the cold, especially when I see shiny new devices like the Zune HD. Sure, I could always use Boot Camp, but I prefer not to clutter up my pretty Mac with Windows XP, thankyouverymuch. Plus, dual booting isn’t exactly a seamless experience.

That’s where VMWare Fusion comes into play. At $80, the software is about the same price as Windows XP Home–not cheap–but it provides a super simple way to run apps and connect devices that are otherwise relegated to Windows machines. Plus, it integrates seamlessly into the Dock. Of course, I would prefer if Microsoft would just make the Zune HD and Marketplace Mac-compatible to begin with, but in the meantime, this will have to suffice. To see how VMWare Fusion works with the Zune, check out the video below.

Thanks, Nick!

Hands-on with Zune Originals HD designs

Photo of custom etching designs for the Zun HD portable media player. The Zune Originals online store offers tons of colors and etching designs for the Zune HD.

You’ve held your tongue through all the Apple iPod propaganda. Resisted the temptation to put a stock, 32GB MP3-players/zune-hd-32gb-platinum/4505-6490_7-33665869.html”>Zune HD on pre-order. You’ve scrimped and saved and patiently waited until the day when you could order your own unique blue, green, red, custom-etched, deluxe-packaged Zune Originals Zune HD.

Well, dear Zune-ster, that day has come. As of September 15, you can now log onto the Zune Originals online store and design your very own dream Zune HD. Beyond the two capacity options (16GB and 32GB), and five colors (black, platinum, green, blue, and red), you also get access to more than 50 etchings and the ability to inscribe your own personal message.

The downside to the whole Zune Originals option is that you’re paying full price for your Zune HD, plus a few dollars more for some designs, and of course, there’s shipping. But hey, what’s a few extra bucks when it comes to letting your iPod-avoiding freak flag fly?

To get a better sense of the colors and designs available from Zune Originals, check out our hands-on photo gallery.

iPod Nano 5G review: Jack-of-all-trades

MP3-players/apple-ipod-nano-fifth/4505-6490_7-33770795.html”>Photo of iPod Nano next to Flip Ultra HD camcorder. When it comes to camcorders, I won’t be abandoning my Flip anytime soon. But that doesn’t make the iPod Nano any less attractive. The more camera-having gadgets, the merrier.

(Credit: Donald Bell/CNET)

The MP3-players/apple-ipod-nano-fifth/4505-6490_7-33770795.html?tag=nefdprod.rev”>official CNET review of the fifth-generation iPod Nano is done, and I am officially exhausted. Someone please tell Apple to stop adding features to this thing. Remember when all an MP3 player to do was play music? CNET’s first iPod review was only 600 words long. These days, you practically have to write a textbook to cover all the features that get crammed into a device like the iPod Nano.

Photo of 4th-generation and 5th-generation iPod Nanos sitting next to each other. An extra 0.2-inch really does make a noticeable difference when you’re dealing with screens this small.

(Credit: Donald Bell/CNET)

Writer’s exhaustion aside, the fifth-generation Nano is a fantastic little gadget that’s one of the easiest-to-recommend stocking stuffers out there. The thing comes in a ton of colors, works with iTunes, helps you lose weight (pedometer), and might even get you to record the world’s next completely unnecessary viral YouTube sensation. Sure, the earbuds are still garbage, but Sony seems to be the only manufacturer MP3-players/sony-x-series-walkman/4505-6490_7-33485025.html?tag=nefdprod.rev”>fighting that battle.

To prevent from boring you to tears, one area of the iPod Nano’s performance I didn’t go into exhaustive detail over is the video camera’s image quality. If you’re curious, I ran a few of tests over the weekend, shooting indoors and outdoors, and A/B testing the Nano against the Flip UltraHD. Aside from the obvious image quality differences, I also found problems with the Nano’s tilt-sensor getting tripped-up on the camera’s orientation and capturing videos sideways. Editing programs will often be smart enough to reorient the video automatically, but the glitch shows just one more way where a dedicated camcorder like the Flip gets things right.

Image comparing video frame stills from iPod Nano and Flip Ultra HD camcorder.Comparing the $199 Flip UltraHD video capture quality (left) to the $149 iPod Nano’s (right). Click to enlarge.

(Credit: Donald Bell/CNET)

Still, minor complaints aside, the Nano is still an exceptional itty-bitty do-it-all gadget for the price. You really have to take the Nano’s camcorder with a grain of salt. It is, after all, an MP3 player. But if video recording tests really float your boat, former CNET-er Tim Moynihan has an comprehensive comparison of pocket camera and iPod Nano video tests. Otherwise, check out my rated review of the fifth-generation Apple iPod Nano by heading on over to MP3-players/apple-ipod-nano-fifth/4505-6490_7-33770795.html”>CNET Reviews.

Music is probably the most popular form of entertainment

Nowadays, music is probably the most popular form of entertainment. Most people like at least some genre of music, which again, differs from person to person. It is a going trend now to have music on the go. Anywhere. And this is being possible largely because of the introduction of mp3 players. No matter what kind of music you like or where you are going, work or leisure, you can always have an mp3 player on yourself and carry your music around. Tune in your favorite songs whenever you feel like it. Obviously, you have to get a certain kind of device for that. There are also various kinds of mp3 players. There happens to be a lot of Chinese made low-end players that just about serve the purpose of listening. And they also come with different storage capacities. However, the most popular form of mp3 player is of course, the iPod, manufactured by Apple, Inc. Microsoft tried to suppress Apple’s business with the iPod by creating Zune, another high-end mp3 player. But it did not prove to be much of a success. On the other hand, Creative has done comparatively well in this business, considering the overall magnitude of the company. They have manufactured different types of mp3 players over the last few years and their midrange players have been successful to a convenient extent.

The phrase ‘media players’ defines all those devices that can not only play audio, but can also play videos as well as show images or any other media. So, this is something for everyone. It does not matter what you like – music or movies, this is the thing for you. Nowadays some media players even come with cameras and extendable memories, which is of course, a plus point.

iPod, again, is probably the most popular media player. The recent versions of iPod have been equipped to deal with all sorts of media and as always, they come in a trendy small box with a quite large screen. Therefore, you can enjoy music, watch movies or have a look at your photos anytime. Zune, by Microsoft, also featured these and a bit more as well. It could download music from the Internet too. Creative has also introduced the Zen, which can play audio or video and in addition, it features an HD camera that can be used to record video and take pictures.

Other media players include desktop or portable DVD players. The first comes only as a console with a place to insert your DVD, whereas the latter features a screen as well. Both are quite handy and can play great quality audio or video without taking into account whether you are home or out.

By: Jahir Kamal

About the Author:

Despite the fact that there are several types of media or mp3 player in the market, consumers happen to prefer the portable ones to the desktop ones. And for this reason, iPod is the dominant media player , although there are a lot of other brands that are nowadays becoming more available.

Zune – Pros and Cons

Tony Connor asked:

The Zune is the first real competitor to the iPod and has some features the iPod doesn’t and, in some areas, it isn’t as good. I have researched the Zune and have put together a list of the more common pros and cons. A lot of these are compared to the iPod, but not all.

Pros

Better sounding music – even though the Zune does not have an equalizer people have reported that the music sounds better.

Can use click and/or touch – if you don’t like the click wheel (from the iPod) you are able to use the touch method on the Zune where, for instance, to go down a list you just touch the bottom of the pad.

Great screen – large, clear and easy to read.

Navigation – once you are used to it, it is very friendly.

FM radio – also includes RDBS

Supports podcasts – so you can still get you fix of your favorite podcast

Wireless sync with PC using WiFi – so much better than a cable!

Well made – feels solid.

Cons

Battery life – a common complaint for media players, especially for people who watch a lot of video.

PC Software – the software can take a while to get used to (so much so, people can give up), but once you’re used to it, it’s better than iTunes.

Changing from an iPod – Apple doesn’t make it easy to move music!

Cannot be used to store files – this is a feature most MP3 players have, strange that the Zune doesn’t.

Overall the Zune is a welcome addition to the media player market. It can be hard to give up your iPod, especially when you are used to it, but you should consider the Zune next time you are looking to replace your media player.
