And although MP3 players are a great convenience and are not difficult to use, there are differences between them, specifically in terms of their inner workings. Let’s take a look at the technological differences to get a better idea of what this means.
Hard Drive Based MP3 Players
Also referred to as Digital Jukeboxes, a hard drive based MP3 player can incorporate, nowadays, up to a 100 gigabyte memory card. That’s an awesome size providing an abundant amount of space to store all of your digital files. A hard drive based MP3 player affords you with the opportunity to download and store all of your music and other digital files directly into your MP3, where they will remain for safe keeping and your listening and viewing pleasure until you either delete them, add to them or copy over them. Once the hard drive is full, it’s full, however it would take a very, very long time and an enormous amount of digital files to fill up 100 gig hard drive.
There is also something called a micro-hard drive MP3 player that is available as well. These have a smaller memory capacity, but are also much lighter than the MP3 players with the larger hard drives.
Flash Based MP3 Player
Flash based MP3 players are latest craze to hit the portable audio and video device market. Unlike the hard drive based MP3 player, a flash based player only provides you with up to 4 gigabytes of memory on each card, but those cards are interchangeable. So you can still collect music, videos and photos with a flash based MP3 player, however they don’t have nearly the same amount of storage space. But as mentioned, you can change the flash card as frequently as you like, almost like changing a CD on your stereo. Keep in mind that you need special, additional, compatible equipment such as a flash reader for your computer in order for you to be able to download the digital files and then transfer the card to your MP3 player.

Maybe you are going to the gym and need something small and skip-proof for running or lifting. Maybe you have an 10 hour (or even longer) plane ride when you go on a business trip and need to pass the time. Maybe you want a new one just for the sake of having a new one. Whatever it is, this article may help you select.
First, for those of you who want something for working out: The two most important things to look for are size/weight and RAM, things CD players don’t have. You want something that you can clip to your shorts or strap to your arm that won’t interfere with your movements, and you want it to be so light that you don’t even notice it. (Tip: Get a lithium ion battery to save even more weight.) To be sure that your player will not skip if you move too much or too fast, get one with internal Flash memory, which has no moving parts so it can’t skip. These are available as 1GB to 16 GB models, with a 1 GB model holding several hours of music. Prices typically range from $20 to $600.
On the other side, you may want to store all 16,000 songs in your collection on your player so you never hear the same song twice. In this case you need a hard drive based mp3 player, commonly known as an mp3 jukebox, for which you could pay up to $800 . It will be a little bigger and heavier than and not quite as durable as a RAM (flash RAM) player, but that is not a concern if you just want to sit and listen to good music. And they are still far more portable than the old CD player.

How To Choose The Right MP3 Player For You
1) First of all, you need to find out what are your needs. It sounds obvious, but choosing the right mp3 player for you starts right here.
You should ask yourself “What kind of mp3 player do I want?” and “What I will be using the mp3 player for?”
Can you afford an expensive mp3 player, or do you want a cheaper one? You will use it while driving to and from work, working around the house or exercising? It needs to play video files and to show pictures as well? Or maybe you need it to have a FM radio tuner or digital voice recording features.
Find out exactly what you need it for and then it will be much easier to choose.
2) There are two types of mp3 players: flash mp3 players and hard drive mp3 players.
The advantage of the flash mp3 players is that they have no moving parts (they have an embedded memory chip) and are ideal to use while running or exercising. Another advantage is that they are cheaper than hard disk mp3 players.
The disadvantage is that flash mp3 players have relatively low memory, but on the other hand they can be upgraded by choosing a larger memory card.
The other type of mp3 players are similar to computers, considering the fact that they hold the memory on a hard disk. They are also known as “jukeboxes” and have hard drives of 20 GB or more. And this is their main advantage, because you can store much more content. You can play music and audio books and lately display pictures and play video files as well.
However, you need to know that the hard disk is not upgradeable, so you should decide right from the start how much storage space do you really need. Another disadvantage is that they are expensive compared to the flash mp3 players.
3) If price is important to you, then you need to know that you can have a flash mp3 player for $100 or less. The most expensive hard drive mp3 players can cost in the $500 range.
However, as new models appear all the time, older quality models are now available at cheaper prices, even for the hard drive mp3 players.
4) Research before you buy. We often tend to buy on impulse, but please don’t do it. It is very easy to get on the Internet and check the websites with reviews from other users or comparison websites. This way you can find “insider” information that you would otherwise have no access to.
You can even find websites that will show you web sites with various prices for the same mp3 player, and the differences can be quite large. You never know when you can find a really good deal.
Basically, know what you want and need and then do the research. This way you can be almost sure that you will choose the right mp3 player for you.

Understanding Hard Drives – MP3 Hard Drive Players
In regard to the MP3 players, or the digital audio players, there are three main drive types a person should know about: the MP3 CD players; the flash-based player that are low-storage devices; and the hard drive-based players or digital jukeboxes. The last one refers to a device that reads any digital audio files from a hard drive. They are considered better as they have higher capacities, ranging from 128M to 8GB. Solid state with no moving parts, they are considered very resilient. It is projected that flash-based media will surpass the hard drive based players, making them obsolete. Images and video media support is becoming quite accepted among hard drives, due to their capacity and physical size. So with all this in mind, it is time to look at how it relates to the MP3 devices and what you want to buy.
The first thing in picking the right hard drive player is to decide just what you are hoping to get out of the device. Are you looking for a hard drive player that can hold a few audio books for a long trip? Are you looking for a hard drive player that can hold your entire music collection? Or are you just looking for a hard drive player that looks pretty? Hopefully it’s not the last option or you may want to consider a nice, shiny walkman. If you are simply looking for a hard drive player that will hold an audio book or two then one of the more affordable players with a few gigs of memory should do just fine. If you are looking for something to store your entire music collection on then you need to do a little math. Currently you can find hard drive players with memory space from 1GB of memory all the way to 60GB of memory – so, how much do you need?
With a massive music collection, you are looking at a pretty high end hard drive player, unless you are willing to weed out all of the songs you don’t want off of every CD. This takes forever and is strongly discouraged. It is difficult for some to grasp just how much music you can fit on to each size of hard drive player, but a general rule of thumb is 500 songs per gigabyte. So 4GB will give you roughly 2,000 songs and 60GB will give you around 30,000 songs.
Finally, decide what types of extras are important to you in a hard drive music player. Do you want to be able to view photos, watch videos, or do both? Would you like to have an FM tuner or recorder? Is optional data storage important to you? Is it important for you to have accessories (belt clips and cases, etc.) for your hard drive player? You may not want any of these, but it is best to choose which you would want because almost all of the MP3 devices will come with something “extra” now to entice buyers into their stores. So, you might as well get something now that you will use later on.
