mini riser Mini Risers keep it simple

My all time favorite accessories always seem to be the incredibly simple solutions.  The ones you really feel like you should have been smart enough to come up with on your own, but didn’t.  These Mini Risers are one of those items.  They don’t go overboard with big fans that you don’t always need.  Instead they just simply raise up your laptop to allow for all of that hot air to escape.

Truthfully, my laptop does get hot like most laptops out there, but I’ve never felt like it was really enough for me to rush out and buy an electronic laptop stand with dual fans.  I’ve had laptops before that need their own window air conditioner, but for my current one these Mini Risers would work perfectly.  If you think those little wire things will sit awkwardly in your laptop bag, you should check out their product site.  They have a picture that shows the perfect way to carry it without taking up extra space.  These come in a total of 10 colors, some falling in the subtle category while others go for that eye popping effect.  You can purchase these in sets of 2 for all of $7.95.

500x backpack3 01 300x167 Laser Backpack can scan interiors in 3DJust to let you know, this man isn’t some new intern at the Ghostbusters. He is wearing a prototype of a room-scanning backpack.

Yes, it is heavy, but this UC Berkley project is downright useful. It has a lot of lasers and cameras on it, and the wearer can walk down a hall, stairs, or even caves and use the data to generate a really quick 3D model. It essentially is one of those satellite mapping programs but can do indoors instead of outdoors.

I believe that one of the purposes of this device is to map out interiors easily, and it would be a very useful tool for making 3D video games. So, the next time Tomb Raider has to run with guns through Croft Manor, the interior shots can be done with this device.

I find this quote from my source quite disturbing:

One day, you’ll have a little pack of sensors on your belt. And, as you walk inside buildings, you collect data about everything. Every location in the universe, both indoors and outdoors will eventually be mapped and we’ll have it all online. So, without ever going anywhere, you can see what everybody’s interior looks like.

I suppose that I support the belt-sized unit of this, but I don’t know if I want every area in the universe to be mapped. Do you really need to know what posters your neighbor has on his or her wall? Plus, I like going to places even though I can see them on the computer.

800px Kheops Pyramid 610x374 300x183 Great Pyramid to be explored by robotThis is the Great Pyramid of Giza, and it has been around since 2560 B.C.. Believe it or not, there are some areas of it that have

not been explored.

In fact, there are two unexplored air shafts that can cannot be searched in the traditional archeological manner. The solution is robots.

This is the Djedi project, a robotic tunnel explorer that can drill through stone and burrow through holes less than one inch in diameter. It also has a mini ultrasonic device that is able to listen to the response to help determine the “thickness and condition of the stone, and a coring drill that can penetrate the rock (if necessary) while removing the minimum amount of material necessary”. Lights and “snake cameras” will help the researchers see exactly where it is going.

This is important because an archaeological expedition in 1992 found a limestone door with two copper handles. After drilling through that door ten years later, they found another door, and they still don’t know what is behind that other door.

It is delicate work, and who knows what could be behind that door. Maybe it is some giant machine that will destroy the sun, like in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Oh, that is just one of the bad things of that awful film. Here’s hoping they find some real treasure.

iphone wood skin Wood Paneling for your Apple gadgets

You just don’t see much wood paneling these days.  After it became a bit dated, everyone started ripping it from their walls and going for bright paints to brighten up the room.  If you’re dying to bring a little wood paneling back into your life, but don’t want to cover your walls in it, you can at least cover your Apple gadgets.  Plus with these skins you won’t have nearly the long term commitment that wood paneling requires.

These wood-like skins come for your MacBook, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and even the iPad.  They also have subtle variations that you get to choose between.  Your choices are cherry, cherry-mahogany, maple, walnut-ebony and walnut.  The prices range on these from $15 on up to $35 mostly depending on the size of your gadget.  You just need to pick them up through the Recover Online Store.

Gigantic robot arm F1 simulator thumb 550xauto 44605 274x300 And Now the Award for Best Use of a Giant Robotic ArmMy source called this photo the “image of the day”, and I have to agree. You might wonder this is. Just to let you know, it has nothing to do with Neo and his friends aboard the Nebuchadnezzar getting plugged into the Matrix.

It is about creating a virtual simulation. Believe it or not, the purple section that you see in the photo is part of a gigantic robotic arm. I don’t know what this mammoth robot arm was originally used for, but it is now a vital part of a racing simulator. You can watch the video after the jump if you don’t believe me.

I guess what you don’t see here in the picture is the video screen that is certainly in front of the user in the video. You will notice how the arm will lean back as the speed increases, and it shifts back and forth with the turns. I’m pretty certain that this is how Disneyland’s Star Tours works.

This robot arm/racing simulator is part of a study by Paolo Robuffo Giordano at Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, researching the way our bodies experience motion. I don’t think it is made for home use like the SimCraft, but I suppose if I had a giant robot arm, a TV screen, a racing game, then this is definitely the best combination that I could think of.

20100720143641 1 660x453 300x205 Prototype UAV glider can land on wiresSome of you might remember the Zephyr, a solar-powered UAV that can charge itself with the power of the sun. Some researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are working on a plane that can charge in a very unconventional method.

This would be a smaller plane, and possibly not hold a passenger. This autonomous glider would have the ability to land on a wire, just like a bird. Not only that, it could tap into the electrical wire and use the power to charge the plane’s batteries.

Somehow I don’t think this will work for jumbo jet liners. However, you have to admire how much modern-day scientists are struggling to keep up with something of nature.
Apparently, this experimental glider will have to have some sort of wings like a bird in order to do these cool landings.

The researchers hope that their technology could help search and rescue teams as this UAV could land on a branch of a tree.

I don’t know how well planes with actual wings will work, especially with the large planes that we have now. A 747 with flapping wings sounds like Flintstones technology. I think they used to do air-trips by flying on giant pterodactyls.
