immortal Immortal Video SunglassesHmmm, summer’s out already with fall kicking in – does that mean it is time to shed that pair of sunnies? We think not, especially when you own a pair of Immortal Video Sunglasses that are going for £249. They won’t lengthen your life on this earth in any way, but are capable of recording high quality videos at whatever you look at when wearing them, courtesy of a tiny pinhole camera that is located right out in front.

Of course, singles won’t mind wearing this daily, but those with spouses might want to be more careful with what they look at next time – don’t let your eyes linger on a particular subject for too long! Videos recorded are in 736 x 480 resolution, and can be transferred over to your computer via USB. Picture 3 300x172 Robotic Wheelchair to Follow YouI’m not certain what comes to your mind when you read the words “robotic wheelchair” in the headline. Perhaps a normal wheelchair that is pushed by a robot like C3PO, or one that runs on completely on automation (like an R2-D2 wheelchair, if we can extend the Star Wars metaphor).

Actually, this is a concept project from the Saitama University Human and Robot Interaction Center. As you can see from the picture, there is no separate robot doing the pushing, but the wheelchair behind the person in the photo is automated, to some degree.

The wheelchair has a built-in distance sensor and camera system that can track the position of someone in front of them, and follow them. It can also follow someone who is on the side of them, which is easier for conversation.

This robotic wheelchair is definitely handy for temporarily alleviating wheelchair controls, which can be clumsy and awkward at times. It also comes in handy in rest homes and hospitals, where understaffed facilities can lead to one person pushing two wheelchairs at a time. If robotic wheelchairs are used, then it is possible that a train of wheelchairs can follow one person.

I guess this is the future, and I suppose it won’t be long before we see it being used all over. For now, it is still a concept.

digibike Digi Bike to raise awareness on leaving valuables asideIf you hang around in Las Vegas for a few minutes, you’ll see these “billboard trucks” that serve no purpose other than to drive around with a giant-sized advertisement. They usually have pretty girls on them, for reasons that I won’t bother to explain here.

Apparently, this is the same purpose of the Digi-bike. Don’t ask me why it is called a bike, because it is a four-wheeled contraption. Perhaps Digi-wagon could be a better description.

The Digi-bike is some sort of weird contraption with a digital billboard with one purpose, as far as I know. It is designed to reduce the number of robberies in Dudley, UK.

Apparently, the billboard gives to raise awareness among people carrying valuables. Considering I once left my camera behind in a booth at E3, I would appreciate a friendly reminder. By the way, my camera was returned to me, and I’m assuming that it has nothing to do with this style of reminding.

So far, the plan for the Digi-bike will include coverage for Castlegate Leisure Park, Russells Hall Hospital car park, the zoo, the bus station, and the Tesco store at Burnt Tree Island.

I can’t help but wonder what else you can use the Digi-Bike for besides advertising. Maybe you can think of something.

humanpylon1 thumb 550xauto 44973 300x210 High voltage power towers that look like menYou’ve seen giant utility towers before, and they don’t look like this. Their design really is…well, utilitarian.

These utility towers are designed by the Massachusetts architecture firm Choi + Shire, and they recently won an honorable mention award at the Icelandic High Voltage Electrical Pylon International Design Competition, as well as an award from the Boston Society of Architects for unbuilt architecture.

I believe that this concept project is called the Land of the Giants, and it is very aptly named. What else are you going to call two human-shaped towers that hold up powerlines?

I suppose the real question is, would this look good in real life? In all honesty, I can tell you what it reminds me of: Batman and Robin. Yes, the last ever Joel Schumacher Batman film that dared to show Gotham city as this place where statues and buildings were as one.

I didn’t see a single high voltage tower in that film, but it would probably look like this.

I mean, do we want all of our structures to look like people

? I mean, what does that say about us as people, that we like to structure our buildings after our own bodies? That is kind of crazy.

luggage tag usb flash drive 500x333 Luggage Tag Flash Drive

Luggage tags are handy to help your luggage make its way back to you should it get separated from you.  However, that tiny little tag only leaves room for an address, your name and an email.  There are times when you might want more information listed, for those occasions, you could add some extra information on the flash drive itself.

If you’re a student and want the suitcase sent to a different address than your parent’s address.  You can always include certain details like that on the tag.  You could even just use it as a normal flash drive when you’re not traveling.  They come in bright colors, so you’ll easily be able spot your bag from a distance.  Each one of the 2GB drives can be purchased for $29.95.

lomo360 Lomo Panoramic 360° CameraTake a Lomo camera and have it shoot at all angles around you and what do you get? Why, the Lomo Panoramic 360° Camera, of course! This £99.99 addition to your shutterbug collection will put a whole new perspective on things, and despite using 35mm film and a manual rubber band drive, it is one unique camera that is capable of shooting truly panoramic shots of the world around you. All you need to do is take hold of the handle, tug the ripcord and check out the Lomo as it spins on its own axis, shootnig everything all round in sight, making the final product four times longer compared to the standard landscape snap.

Perfect for those who want to expand upon their photography skills, and you can also shoot 180° images by only pulling the cord halfway. Since it uses traditional film, you’ll probably need to make more budget for all the amount of film involved, not to mention its processing.

Gigantic robot arm F1 simulator thumb 550xauto 44605 274x300 And Now the Award for Best Use of a Giant Robotic ArmMy source called this photo the “image of the day”, and I have to agree. You might wonder this is. Just to let you know, it has nothing to do with Neo and his friends aboard the Nebuchadnezzar getting plugged into the Matrix.

It is about creating a virtual simulation. Believe it or not, the purple section that you see in the photo is part of a gigantic robotic arm. I don’t know what this mammoth robot arm was originally used for, but it is now a vital part of a racing simulator. You can watch the video after the jump if you don’t believe me.

I guess what you don’t see here in the picture is the video screen that is certainly in front of the user in the video. You will notice how the arm will lean back as the speed increases, and it shifts back and forth with the turns. I’m pretty certain that this is how Disneyland’s Star Tours works.

This robot arm/racing simulator is part of a study by Paolo Robuffo Giordano at Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, researching the way our bodies experience motion. I don’t think it is made for home use like the SimCraft, but I suppose if I had a giant robot arm, a TV screen, a racing game, then this is definitely the best combination that I could think of.

driver1 300x217 Driverless vehicles to go from Italy to ChinaImagine a long drive that starts from Parma, Italy and ends in China. Now imagine this drive happening without drivers.

This is exactly the project that is planned to take place. This proposed trip wouldn’t be about sending a Knight Rider type car to make the trip all by its lonesome, but with four vans. One van will be in front, with the two robot vans in the middle, followed by a normally driven van in case of maintenance issues.

The plan is to see how these vehicles will react to stimuli. I am assuming that he is referring to traffic signals, pedestrians, and other highway hazards. Yes, that is very dangerous, and these robot vans are not going to be completely driverless. There will be people behind the wheel that will take over at the push of a button if it looks like there will be trouble.

As project leader Alberto Broggi says:

What we are trying to do is stress our systems and see if they can work in a real environment, with real weather, real traffic and crazy people who cross the road in front of you and a vehicle that cuts you off.

I look forward to hearing about this particular trip. I also can’t wait to hear about the first time we will send a lone driverless vehicle on

the road. I wonder if that is the next step, should this trip prove successful.
